3rd Grade Wins AAU Championship

-July 8, 2014

Orlando, Fl. - The Riverside Hawks are the #1 basketball team in the Country. The 3rd
grade team captured the elusive title yesterday in Orlando, Florida beating Maryland Pride 29-17. The young  Hawks competed against teams from across the country winning all seven games by an average of  14 points.  “Some of the games were incredibly intense,” Coach Danny Colon says. “The boys showed great character in the 1 point overtime victory in the quarter finals against Maryland’s finest, who won it last year.” Colon, who played high school ball at School of the Future and college basketball at City College, says it was the best game I’ve ever played or coached.

In the semi-finals, Riverside was down 14 at the half to ASA out of Atlanta, GA. Coach Colon made a defensive adjustment and the Hawks responding by only permitting 4 points in the 2nd half en
route to a 7 point victory.  “Our team defensive was phenomenal all week,” Colon says.

Colon says the team was not always easy to deal. “I wanted to kill myself in October.
Getting them to buy into a system and share the ball was a challenge and the boys were so emotional. I felt like a psychiatrist more than a basketball coach.” According to Colon, the team began to gel in April at a tournament in Pennsylvania when they avenged an earlier loss at the same tournament to the number 4 team in Country, winning 18 points.” It’s a true attribute to the boys hard work and dedication in practice and the commitment of the parents to have their children attend every practice.”

The Riverside Hawks has a tremendous tradition, featuring 65 NBA players including Kenny Smith, Kenny Anderson, Chris Mullin and countless college basketball players and is fixture in the Harlem Community. In the last 10 years, the Hawks have won 3 Division 2 National Championships, but this victory is the first Division 1 National Championship in the history of the program and the firs for a NY team in 10 years.

Colon said the team played great but he’s exhausted. Colon also coaches the Riverside
4th grade team, which travels to Kentucky on Monday for the National Championship.
